Here, Now
When Fred and Nora run into each other after having a one night stand years prior they grapple with the feelings that they may or may not still have for each other.
This is a scene I actually had written a while back as part of a feature idea that I’d been kicking around. I originally intended for it to all take place in the coffee shop, but in this form as a short I wanted to try something different with flashbacks. I decided to pull from how Terrance Malick and Michel Gondry designed flashbacks in “The Thin Red Line” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and give each character a flashback within their own consciousness and subjectivity. The result of this is a pair of flashbacks in which a character continues their dialogue from the main scene, rather than what they would have really been saying in the time and location that we’re seeing on screen, while the other character is ingrained in the moment and time of the flashback because we’re looking back on these moments subjectively from a single character’s point of view.
